Ukrainian Drones Strike Moscow's Largest Oil Refinery, Triggering Major Fires
Ukrainian drones struck the Gazprom Neft refinery in Moscow's Kapotnya district, causing major fires and forcing operations to halt again after a previous attack on June 16. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that several drones penetrated defenses. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the strike a precise response to Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities.
The refinery, which provides around 40 percent of Moscow's fuel requirements, was hit despite Russian air defenses reportedly shooting down dozens of incoming drones. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that several drones managed to penetrate defensive systems and reach their targets. No immediate casualties were reported, while emergency response teams were deployed to battle the fires. Authorities also issued warnings over the possibility of "black rain" in affected areas.
The sky over Moscow is black from the smoke of burning oil. Oil rain may fall on the Kremlin itself.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the operation as a precise retaliatory strike carried out by Ukrainian forces in response to continued Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities. The latest assault came only 15 kilometers from the Kremlin, underscoring Kyiv's expanding capability to strike strategic targets deep inside Russian territory.
The attack marks another escalation in the conflict and highlights the growing reach of Ukrainian drone operations. The strike on Moscow's biggest fuel producer carries significant strategic implications as both sides continue to intensify military actions and retaliatory attacks.
